Magic in Thailand: Tattooing 'charms'
If tattooing is a mandatory ritual of the yakuza (Japanese mafia); for women of Papua New Guinea (a country near Australia), tattooed when reaching puberty as a dragon skull milestone to mark adulthood or 19th-century European aristocrats tattooed to affirm their social status.. . then in Thailand there is sak yant.

Sak yant is a form of "magic" tattoo that is quite sacred to the Thai people (sak means stabbing, yant is sacred symbols and characters that can arouse supernatural power). This form of tattoo is not only for beauty but it is also a kind of amulet.

MEANING 5 HAH TAEW

Hah taew is magical power, born of four elements: fire, water, air and earth, represented by 5 lines of magic spells.

Row 1: helps to avoid bad things, ward off evil spirits, and protect your abode.

Row 2: helps you avoid bad omens, change bad luck.

Row 3: Protect yourself from witchcraft that others intend to harm.

Row 4: bring luck, success in life as well as in work.

Row 5: helps attract the opposite sex.

Actually tattooing as a form of self-protection is not strange. In Linh Nam Chic Quai, it is said that in the past, Bach Viet (ancient Vietnamese) people who went to the sea were often harmed by the sea, so they tattooed the water monster on their body so that they could look like themselves and ignore it. However, Thai people not only tattoo but also chant and bless the tattoo.
"Do you know why Thailand has never been colonized?", the Thai friend suddenly asked. When I was still thinking, he answered and explained himself: “Thanks to sak yant! In the past, before going to war, soldiers would go to the temple to ask the monks to tattoo magic. Those sacred tattoos have turned Thai people into "ghost" warriors with unparalleled strength, always "invisible" before the enemy. Thanks to that, the country will be at peace."

Of course it is impossible to believe that but indeed for many Thais, sak yant has an invisible power. In particular, Muay Thai boxers believe in magic tattoos because they hope to be protected by "miracles" when competing.

Sak yant appeared from the time of Angkor, so it was heavily influenced by Khmer culture. Most of the sacred inscriptions are written in ancient Khmer script (Sanskrit).

Paeng, a tattoo artist at Bangkok ink tattoo shop (Nana entertainment area, Bangkok), said: “Yant (image, sacred character) is also considered a high-power talisman. There are thousands of yants for many purposes, from letting children sleep well at night to fighting evil spirits and evil spirits. Thus, yant is divided into several groups such as kong krapan: invisible, klawe klaad: escape, choke laap: auspicious, maha saneh: seductive, medta mah niyom: influence others, maha amnat: power Force and Maha Jong Ngan: Beat the opponent. Depending on the needs of each person, choose the appropriate group of tattoos.

Thai people believe that the power of sak yant will diminish over time. Therefore, people who have been tattooed with "magic" every year often come back to ask the master to "restore magic". In March every year, Bang Phra Temple (Nakhon Pathom province) holds a grand sak yant ceremony with the participation of tens of thousands of people, both tattooing new people and "recovering" old tattoos.

The world pays attention to sak yant because... Angelina Jolie

Sak yant has been present for centuries, but only in recent decades, the world has paid attention to sak yant because... Angelina Jolie. She traveled to Thailand to get a sacred tattoo on her body. Her first tattoo is 5 lines magic hah taew. After that, she went back to Thailand again to get a tiger tattoo on her lower back.

Following in the footsteps of Angelina Jolie, the Hollywood actress, Michelle Rodriguez, famous in the Fast and Furious series, also went to Thailand to have the same 5 lines tattooed.

Not only fascinates the actors, sak yant also day of the dead makes one of the best defenders in the world, the Italian team player Fabio Cannavaro fascinates. This 2006 World Cup champion tattooed his shoulders with sacred words in Sanskrit to pray for good luck and health for himself and his family.

Vietnamese people do not suffer. Actress Ngo Thanh Van also flew to Thailand to find a teacher Noo Kanpai (who tattooed Angelina Jolie) to get 5 lines of hah taew tattoo on her shoulder like a Hollywood princess. But not only Ngo Thanh Van, later there was a "wave" of Vietnamese office workers who also wanted to own magic tattoos.
